Continuous intake of glucopolysaccharide (GPS) [Wellmune WGP] derived from baker's yeast is confirmed to improve mood and emotional states caused by stress. Sixteen Japanese staffs working at a hospital specialized in dialysis, who appeared to suffer from stress, judging from the results of Japanese translation of the Profile of Mood States (POMS), were exmined for the effect of GPS. The effect on mood and emotional states by continuous intake of GPS was investigated; GPS was administered at 125 mg/1 capsule every morning before breakfast for 30 days. Mean value of total mood disturbance (TMD) and 5 negative factor scores except vigor (V) were all decreased significantly compared with before intake. At 30 days, depression-dejections (D), anger-hostility (A-H), fatigue (F) and TMD scores were decreased significantly compared with those before intake. It was suggested that the mood and emotional states would be improved by continuouis intake of GPS within a comparatively short term of 14 days.
